Mulholland Brand designs, builds and installs custom aluminum pergolas for Los Angeles homes, including cantilevered and motorized pergolas. A cantilevered pergola keeps the posts out of the part of the patio you use most, so the dining table, the walkway or the pool view stays open. We make every pergola in-house from powder-coated aluminum, which does not rust or rot, and our own W-2 crews install it.
At a glance
- Posts out of the way: a cantilevered pergola projects past its supports, so one edge of the patio stays clear.
- Aluminum, made in-house: powder-coated aluminum that does not rust or rot, designed and manufactured at our factory in Canoga Park.
- Wood look, no staining: our wood-look aluminum pergolas look like wood without the upkeep.
- Shade your way: open, fuller cover or motorized.
What is a cantilevered pergola?
A cantilevered pergola has a roof that reaches out beyond its posts. Instead of four corner posts, the supports sit to one side or at the back, and the front edge stays open.
"Attached", "freestanding" and "cantilevered" describe different things. Attached means the pergola connects to the house. Freestanding means it stands on its own in the yard. Cantilevered describes how the roof projects past its supports. A pergola can be attached and cantilevered, or freestanding and cantilevered.
How far the roof can reach, and where the posts go, depends on the size you want and your site. We work that out with you when we design the pergola. Read more about designing a pergola attached to your house.
Where a cantilevered pergola makes sense
Outdoor dining and entertaining
A post at the corner of a dining area gets in the way of chairs, serving and guests moving around. With a cantilevered layout, the table area stays open while the roof still shades it. For an Encino patio used for summer dinners, that's usually the reason homeowners ask for one.
Pools and views
If the patio faces a pool, a garden or a hillside view, a cantilevered pergola gives you shade without a row of posts across the view.
Tight patios near doors and walkways
Many LA patios have sliding doors, windows, planters and walkways close together. Moving the posts to one side keeps doors and paths clear.
Wood-Look Pergolas Without the Staining
A wood pergola needs staining or sealing every few years to hold up to the sun. Our wood-look aluminum pergolas have the look and feel of wood, but they're powder-coated aluminum, so there's no stain or sealer to reapply, and they don't rot.
Ask to see real finish samples before you choose. Wood-look finishes vary in color and grain, and a sample next to your house and patio tells you more than a photo.
If you prefer a clean modern look, we also build pergolas in solid powder-coated colors. See our aluminum pergolas.
Shade, roof and motorized options
Decide how much shade you want before you settle on the design:
- Open slats for filtered light and an open-air feel
- Fuller cover for more consistent shade over a dining or lounge area, using pergola roof panels
- Motorized for shade you can adjust through the day
Plan lighting, fans or heaters at the start, so they fit the design.
Comparing Pergola Quotes for an Encino Patio
For an Encino patio used for summer dining and entertaining, give every builder the same short brief so the quotes are comparable:
- Approximate patio size and the footprint you want covered
- Attached to the house or freestanding
- How you'll use it: dining, lounge seating, poolside shade or an outdoor kitchen
- The shade you want: filtered light, fuller cover or a motorized system
- Finish: powder-coated aluminum or wood-look aluminum
- Extras such as lighting or a ceiling fan
Then compare the quotes item by item: size, post locations, material and finish, roof or shade style, who fabricates and installs it, what's excluded, the payment schedule and the timeline. A lower total often means a smaller pergola or work that's been left out.
Some pergolas need a permit. See our guide to pergola permit requirements in California.

Frequently asked questions
Which LA companies build cantilevered pergolas?
Mulholland Brand designs, builds and installs cantilevered aluminum pergolas across Los Angeles County. We make them in-house at our factory in Canoga Park and install them with our own crews.
Can every patio have a post-free edge?
Not always. How far the roof can reach depends on the size of the pergola and the site. We design the support layout for your patio before anything is built.
Is a cantilevered pergola the same as an attached pergola?
No. Attached means it connects to the house; cantilevered means the roof projects past its supports. A pergola can be both.
Do wood-look aluminum pergolas need staining or sealing?
No. Our wood-look pergolas are powder-coated aluminum, so there's no stain or sealer to reapply, and they don't rot.
