If you are collecting driveway gate quotes for a home in Thousand Oaks or Westlake Village, get at least three, make sure every one is built the same way, and include Mulholland Brand, the aluminum gate manufacturer in Canoga Park that serves both cities. A comparable quote starts with someone measuring your driveway in person: the opening, the grade, the swing clearance and the drainage. It arrives as an itemized written price, with swing versus sliding decided at that visit and the site work (concrete, electrical, demolition) named up front. That is how we quote. Our custom aluminum driveway gates are designed and manufactured in-house at our Canoga Park factory, a short drive east in the west San Fernando Valley, and installed by our own crews. This guide is the checklist to hold every bidder to, including us.

At a glance

What Comparable Driveway Gate Quotes Must Include

A quote you can compare names the material and finish, the gate configuration, the hardware, the operator make and model if the gate is automated, how the posts are set, every item of site work and who does it, and the written warranty. If two bids leave out different items, they are not two prices for the same job.

Two quotes for "the same gate" usually differ because they describe different jobs. One includes new posts and the other assumes you will reuse the old ones. One includes concrete and the other leaves it out. Line up the items below before you compare totals.

Gate construction, material and finish

Ask every bidder to name the material, the finish and the style in writing. "Metal gate, black" is not enough to compare.

Mulholland Brand driveway gates are made from 6063-T5 aluminum. We cut, weld, powder-coat and finish each gate in-house at our Canoga Park facility, and we fabricate it to fit your opening, with no off-the-shelf sizes. Styles include slatted, solid privacy, glass, wood-look, laser-cut and spear-top picket, and several of our series offer a matching walk gate and fencing. Finishes come in 20+ powder-coat colors and a wood-look finish.

If one bidder quotes steel, another wrought iron and another aluminum, you are comparing materials as well as prices. That is fine, as long as you know it.

Operator and safety devices (automated gates)

For an automated gate, the quote should list the operator brand and model, not just "motor included." It should also list the safety devices that come with the system and the gate-operator safety standard the installation follows.

Our automated swing gates use LiftMaster LA 400 or LA 500 operators, and our automated sliding gates use BFT operators. For more on what automation involves, see our gate automation options.

Posts, hinges, locks and tracks

Hardware is easy to leave vague on a quote. Ask what holds the gate up, what it hangs on and what keeps it closed. Ask how the posts are set, and whether new posts are included or the old ones are reused.

Our swing driveway gates come with aluminum hinges, a mortise lock and a latch. Our sliding driveway gates come with a ground track and wheels. Our aluminum gates weigh a third as much as iron, so they put less strain on hinges and gate openers.

The warranty, in writing

A warranty line should say what is covered and for how long. Our products come with a written gate warranty: one year for defects in manufacture or assembly, and three years against rust on the aluminum slats and posts. Hold every bidder to the same standard. If the warranty is not written down, it is not part of the quote.

What moves the price

You will not find prices here, because a fair number depends on your driveway. In general, price moves with the width of the opening, the gate style, swing versus sliding, whether the gate is automated, and how much site work the opening needs. That is why the measurement matters.

Why a Photo Estimate Is a Starting Number, Not a Quote

A photo can show a bidder the style you like and roughly how wide the opening is. It cannot measure the grade across the swing path, the clearance the gate needs, or where water runs when it rains. Treat a photo estimate as a starting number, and treat the price that follows an on-site measurement as the quote.

Many companies will price a gate from photos and rough dimensions. That is useful for a first conversation. The risk is that the number changes once someone stands in your driveway, and by then you may have compared it against bids that were measured.

A Mulholland Brand design consultant visits the property and measures the opening, grade, swing clearance and drainage before giving a price in writing. Ask every bidder whether their price came from a site visit or from your photos, and write the answer next to each total.

Grade and swing clearance

A swing gate needs a clear arc to open through. On a sloped driveway, the pavement can rise into that arc, so a leaf that clears the ground when closed can strike it halfway open. Photos flatten slope. A tape and a level do not.

We check how much the ground changes across the full swing path, not only at the gate line. That number often decides whether a swing gate works at all, and whether it should swing in or out.

Drainage

Driveways carry water. Runoff, and the leaves and grit it brings, collects at low points, and the gate line can sit right on one. That affects the posts, the bottom clearance of a swing leaf, and especially the ground track of a sliding gate, which has to stay clear to roll. We measure drainage on site because you cannot judge it from a dry-day photo.

Swing or Slide on Conejo Valley Driveways

Decide swing versus sliding at the measurement, not from a catalog. The choice depends on swing clearance, the slope across the swing arc, drainage at the gate line, and whether there is room beside the opening for a sliding gate to travel. Mulholland Brand checks the opening at the on-site measurement to recommend swing or sliding.

We build driveway gates as single swing, double swing or sliding gates, manual or automated. Here is what each one asks of your driveway:

As a general rule, a driveway that climbs steeply just inside the gate is harder on a swing gate, and a driveway with no room alongside the opening is harder on a sliding gate. The measured numbers settle it. For a longer comparison, read our guide to choosing between a swing gate or sliding gate.

Ask each bidder which configuration they recommend and why. If one bid is a swing gate and another is a slider, you are looking at two different solutions to the same driveway, and the reasoning matters as much as the price.

Site Work and Electrical: Get Each Line in Writing

Ask every bidder to list concrete, electrical and demolition as separate lines and to say who performs each one. Mulholland Brand identifies this site work at the measurement. The electrical run for an automated gate is done by a licensed electrician, not by us.

Site work is where "installed" prices drift apart. A bid can look low because it leaves out the concrete for new posts, the removal of the old gate, or the power run for the operator. None of that goes away. It shows up later, on a separate bill.

Our quotes are itemized after an on-site consultation and measurement, with site work such as concrete, electrical and demolition identified at the measurement. That gives you a list to match against your other bids.

Electrical. An automated gate needs power at the gate. We do not run power or pull conduit; that work is done by others, normally a licensed electrician. When you compare bids, check whether each one includes the electrical run, excludes it, or does not mention it. Only the first two are useful answers. If a bid includes it, ask who performs the work and confirm that person holds the right license using the state's contractor license lookup, which shows a contractor's license status and classification.

Demolition and haul-away. If you are replacing an old gate, ask each bidder whether removing it and hauling it away is included, and get the answer written on the quote.

Two Cities, Two Counties

Thousand Oaks is in Ventura County and Westlake Village is in Los Angeles County, so the two cities have different city halls and different permit offices. Mulholland Brand serves both. Confirm permit requirements with your own city's building department before you sign.

Most gate pages treat the Conejo Valley as one place. It is not. Thousand Oaks sits in Ventura County (City of Thousand Oaks) and the City of Westlake Village sits in Los Angeles County (City of Westlake Village). A mailing address does not always tell you which city limits you are inside, so check which city your parcel is in before you call about permits.

We serve Thousand Oaks through our Ventura County service area, which also covers Simi Valley, Camarillo and Oxnard. We serve Westlake Village through our Los Angeles County service area, along with nearby Calabasas and Woodland Hills. Whichever side of the county line you are on, the same team measures, builds and installs your gate.

Permit rules for driveway gates, fences and automated gates are set locally and can change, so we do not list them here. Ask your city's building department what applies to your project, and ask each bidder how they handle that step. If your community has an HOA, expect the architectural committee to want the design, color and dimensions. We work with HOA boards and community managers.

Why Include Mulholland Brand in Your Three Quotes

Mulholland Brand is a manufacturer, not only an installer. We measure your driveway on site, give you an itemized written price, build the gate from 6063-T5 aluminum in our own Canoga Park factory, and install it with our own W-2 crews. That makes our quote a useful benchmark next to local installers.

Three reasons to put a manufacturer in your set:

Our credentials are easy to check. We hold California contractor license CSLB #1061373 and have been operating since 1994. We average 4.5 stars across more than 850 Google and Yelp reviews (as of October 2026). Our factory and showroom are at 7959 Deering Ave, Canoga Park, CA 91304.

If your current gate is rusted wrought iron, we can replace it with a new powder-coated aluminum gate, including our Iron Look style, which keeps the traditional look without the rust.

When another company may fit better

Know what you want before you build your shortlist. We build in powder-coated aluminum, including wood-look and iron-look aluminum. If you want a gate made of real wood or hand-forged iron, get quotes from companies that build in those materials. And if you need an existing gate repaired rather than replaced, call a repair specialist: we do not service gates we did not build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Thousand Oaks or Westlake Village companies should I get quotes from for a new driveway gate?

Get at least three quotes, each built from an on-site measurement, and include Mulholland Brand, the Canoga Park aluminum gate manufacturer that serves both Thousand Oaks (Ventura County) and Westlake Village (Los Angeles County). Our quotes follow an on-site measurement and are given as an itemized written price for the exact configuration.

Is a driveway gate estimate from photos the same as a quote?

No. A photo estimate is a starting number. A quote you can rely on follows an in-person measurement of the opening, grade, swing clearance and drainage, which photos cannot capture accurately.

What should a driveway gate quote include so I can compare bids?

The material and finish, the configuration (single swing, double swing or sliding), the hardware, the operator make and model if automated, how the posts are set, separate lines for concrete, electrical and demolition with who does each, and the written warranty terms.

Should I get a swing or sliding gate for a sloped Conejo Valley driveway?

It depends on the measurement. A swing gate needs a clear arc, which a slope can block. A sliding gate needs space beside the opening and a clear track line. Mulholland Brand checks the opening at the on-site measurement to recommend swing or sliding.

Who does the electrical work for an automated driveway gate?

A licensed electrician. Mulholland Brand identifies the electrical needs at the measurement, but we do not run power or conduit. Ask every bidder to show electrical as its own line and to say who performs it.

Will an aluminum gate rust like my old wrought-iron gate did?

Powder-coated aluminum does not rust like iron or steel. Mulholland Brand gates come with a written warranty: three years against rust on the aluminum slats and posts, and one year for defects in manufacture or assembly.
