Which gates can be built to match?

Nearly every gate on a property can come from the same design series as the fence.

Driveway gates. Mulholland builds driveway gates in more than nine design series, with eight aluminum styles. They can slide or swing. Overhead and barrier-arm gates are available too. In Los Angeles, wide entries often call for a sliding or double-swing gate, and the site measurement settles which.

Walk gates. Pedestrian gates are matched to the driveway gate series, so the front path, the side yard and the driveway all read as one set. In a homeowners association, the powder coat can be matched to an approved association color.

Garage doors. If the garage door is due for replacement, Mulholland can build a new aluminum or glass door to match the gate and fence. It replaces garage doors only and does not repair them.

Automation and access. Mulholland motorizes the gates it builds, with gate motors, openers, safety sensors and exit loops. Access options include keypads, smart locks, fingerprint locks and car-integrated openers. Gates can be prepared for an intercom.

Pool and equipment areas. If the fence runs past a pool, the pool section can be built with code spacing and self-closing gates in the same finish. Pool equipment and HVAC units can be screened with a matching equipment enclosure, so the utility side of the yard looks like the rest of it.

Is aluminum the right material for a privacy fence in LA?

For most Los Angeles homes, yes. It is fair to look at the alternatives first.

Wood looks warm and costs less to start. In the LA sun it dries, cracks and needs staining every few years, and the posts are exposed to rot and termites.

Vinyl does not rot and is low upkeep. The choice of modern profiles and colors is narrower. If you go with vinyl, ask how the driveway gate will be built to match and whether it can carry a motor.

Wrought iron is strong and suits traditional homes. It rusts where the paint chips and it is heavy, which is hard on hinges and gate operators.

Los Angeles has a lot of sloped yards. A fence that ignores the grade leaves gaps under the panels on one end and looks crooked from the street.

Mulholland measures the terrain and slope at the site visit. Fence runs are then engineered to the grade, either stepped in level sections or raked to follow the slope.
