Why is a matching set so hard to get from separate companies?
Most homes end up with a driveway gate from one supplier, a fence from another and a garage door from a third. Each one picks from its own catalog. The slat widths differ. The gaps differ. One is powder-coated, another is factory-painted steel, a third is stained wood.
Colours that look close on a sample chip rarely stay close. Put a painted steel door next to a powder-coated gate in San Diego sun and within a few years the two have drifted apart. The house ends up looking like it was assembled over time, because it was.
When one company builds every piece, the slat, the spacing and the finish are chosen once and repeated. That is the whole point of a set.
What can one house get in a matched set?
Mulholland builds four pieces that are designed to be seen together:
- Driveway gate. Sliding or swing, across more than nine design series. Mulholland motorizes the gates it builds, with openers, safety sensors and exit loops, plus keypads, smart locks or car-integrated openers. Gates can be prepared for an intercom. See driveway gates.
- Walk gate. Pedestrian gates are made to match the driveway gate series, so the side entry reads as part of the same design.
- Fence. Privacy, horizontal-slat, frameless modern and picket profiles, including pool fencing to code spacing with self-closing gates.
- Garage door. A replacement door in aluminum, glass, solid or frameless styles, built to match the gate and fence. See garage doors.

Does Mulholland repair garage doors?
No. Mulholland builds and installs replacement garage doors only. It does not repair or service garage doors, and its repair work covers its own installations.
That matters when you plan the job. A matched set makes the most sense when the garage door is due for replacement anyway, or when you want the front of the house redone as one design. If your current door only needs a spring or opener fixed, a garage door repair company is the right call.
How does San Diego weather affect a matched set?
San Diego is the most coastal county Mulholland serves. Salt air and strong sun work on every exterior surface, and they work on different materials at different speeds. Wood gates dry and split. Steel rusts where the paint chips. A mixed set ages unevenly.
Aluminum does not rust or rot, and it does not need repainting. Mulholland states its powder-coat finish lasts 30+ years in the Southern California sun. Because the gate, fence and door share one finish, they weather together.
Lot shape matters too. Many San Diego homes sit on canyon lots, so the fence is slope-engineered, stepped or raked to follow the grade. A sloped or tight driveway can change whether a sliding or swing gate works. Mulholland measures for that before it designs anything. Aluminum is also non-combustible and CAL FIRE tested, which is worth knowing on a canyon edge.
When is a matched aluminum set not the right choice?
Some homeowners want a real wood driveway gate and are happy to refinish it. Aluminum will not give you that, though Mulholland's woodgrain powder-coat finishes come close enough that customers regularly say they cannot tell. Others only need one piece replaced and like what they have. There is no reason to replace a good gate just to match a new door.
A set earns its keep when two or more of the pieces are worn, or when you are redoing the front of the house and want it to look designed.
What design options are there?
You choose the style once and it runs across every piece.
- Modern. Horizontal slats, frameless panels and a glass or frameless garage door. Modern glass garage doors pair well with a slatted gate.
- Wood-look. Woodgrain finishes on the gate, fence and door, with no sanding, staining, rot or termites.
- Solid privacy. Full panels on the gate and fence with a solid door to match.
- Custom. Laser-cut patterns on the gate panels, repeated across the fence or walk gate.
