Of the companies that install aluminum pergolas in Orange County, Mulholland Brand makes its own. It designs a custom aluminum pergola to the exact dimensions of your yard, fabricates it from powder-coated aluminum at its own factory in Canoga Park, and installs it with its own crew anywhere in Orange County, including Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Anaheim and Fullerton. If you want a pergola built to your space instead of a standard size, ask Mulholland Brand for an on-site measurement and a written quote.

At a glance

Who installs aluminum pergolas in Orange County?

Three kinds of company install aluminum pergolas in Orange County: patio-cover dealers, kit installers and manufacturers. Any of them can leave a pergola in your backyard. They differ in who makes it, how closely it fits your space, and who stands behind it once the crew leaves.

Patio-cover dealers

A patio-cover dealer sells and installs aluminum patio-cover systems made by another company. The pergola is usually one product in a catalogue that may also include solid patio covers, awnings and screen rooms. The dealer picks components from that system and assembles them on your patio.

This fits you if you want a branded patio-cover product and the sizes, profiles and colors that system offers work for your yard.

Kit sellers and kit installers

A kit pergola comes in set sizes. You buy the size closest to your patio, and the seller or a local installer puts it up.

This fits you if a standard size works for your space and you want shade up with as few decisions as possible. For a simple, standard-size kit, a kit installer may be a better fit than a manufacturer.

Manufacturers that build to order

A manufacturer measures your space, designs the pergola to it, builds it in its own shop and installs it. The pergola is sized to your patio, so your patio does not have to adjust to the pergola.

This fits you if you need an exact span, a particular roof, a specific color, a wood-look finish, or a pergola that lines up with a wall, a doorway or an existing gate. That is Mulholland Brand's work.

If you are rebuilding the whole yard

If the pergola is one piece of a full landscape rebuild with pavers, planting and irrigation, a landscape contractor who manages the whole project may suit you better. If you mainly want the pergola done right, a manufacturer that builds and installs pergolas is the more direct route.

What "custom-fabricated" means for an Orange County pergola

Custom-fabricated means your pergola is measured on your property, designed to your exact dimensions, and built and installed by one company. Here is how Mulholland Brand does it:

One company handles every step, so you have one company to call. The team that measured your space is the team whose pergola has to fit it.

Louvered, solid or glass: which pergola roof fits your patio?

Choose a louvered roof if you want to adjust shade and light through the day, a solid roof if you want steady shade overhead, and a glass roof if you want the space covered but still bright. Mulholland Brand builds custom aluminum pergolas with all three.

Louvered roof

A louvered roof has slats that tilt. Open them for sun and air, close them for shade. It suits a patio where the light changes a lot over the day: a west-facing yard in Anaheim or Fullerton that takes the afternoon sun, or a Newport Beach patio that is cool in the morning and bright by midday. For more on how they work, read what a louvered pergola is.

Solid roof

A solid roof gives the same shade every time you step outside. It suits an outdoor dining table, a lounge set or the spot right outside a sliding door. If you know you always want that area shaded, a solid roof keeps the decision simple.

Glass roof

A glass roof covers the space and lets daylight through. It suits a patio against the house, where a solid roof would darken the rooms inside, or a yard where you want to sit under cover and still see the sky. If a glass roof matters to you, raise it in the first conversation with any installer, because not every company offers one.

The motorized Prestige Pergola

The Prestige Pergola is our motorized louvered pergola, with built-in LED lighting. The louvers are motor-driven, so you adjust the shade without reaching up to the slats, and the lighting is part of the structure, not an add-on.

Whether a motorized pergola is worth it depends on how you use the space. If you will adjust the louvers often, or you want lighting built in for evenings outside, motorization earns its place. If you will set the roof once and leave it, a manual louvered roof or a solid roof may be all you need.

One point most sales pages skip: motorized louvers and LED lighting need electrical power at the pergola. We do not do electrical work. We identify where the power will come from at the on-site measurement, so you know before you sign that the power supply will be arranged separately. Nothing about power should surprise you after the pergola goes up.

The finish: powder-coated aluminum in 20+ colors or wood-look

Mulholland Brand pergolas are made from powder-coated aluminum with a baked-on finish, in more than 20 colors or a wood-look finish.

If your home is near the water in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach or Huntington Beach, the finish is the first thing to ask any installer about. We use marine-grade aluminum with an electrostatic powder coat applied in our own powder coating facility, a corrosion-resistant finish that holds up to Southern California sun and salt air. Yards away from the coast, in Irvine or Anaheim, have their own test: sprinklers that wet the posts. Our aluminum pergolas, louvered or solid roof, are engineered to withstand sun, salt air and sprinklers without warping, rusting or fading. Powder-coated aluminum does not rust like iron or steel, and it does not rot or warp.

Wood-look aluminum

If you like the warmth of a wood pergola, wood-look aluminum gives you the look of real wood without the rot, warping or splitting. We do not build real wood pergolas; our wood-look finish is on aluminum, in three wood-grain patterns: oak, walnut and cedar. It never needs staining or refinishing, and it needs less upkeep than wood.

What upkeep looks like

Plan on a fresh-water rinse plus a check of the hardware and moving parts. On a louvered or motorized roof, the louvers are the moving parts, so give them the same check.

If you want to see colors and wood-look finishes at full size before you choose, our Canoga Park showroom shows them.

Matching your pergola to gates and fencing

Some Mulholland Brand pergola styles are designed to match our gates and fencing. Our Hi-Tech pergola matches our Hi-Tech gates and fencing, and our range also includes Profile 24 pergolas and Aluminum Weave pergolas.

This page is about the pergola itself. If you are planning a pergola with a matching privacy fence and gate, read our Orange County pergola, privacy fence and gate planning guide.

What to ask any pergola installer before you sign

Ask every installer who makes the pergola, who installs it, what the finish is, what the warranty covers and what the written quote includes. Here are those questions with Mulholland Brand's answers, so you have something to compare against.

1. Who fabricates the pergola? Some installers assemble a system made by another company. We design and manufacture our pergolas in-house at our Canoga Park factory, where we cut, weld, powder-coat and finish the aluminum.

2. Who installs it? Ask whether the installers are the company's own employees or subcontractors. Our installation is done by our own W-2 employees.

3. What is the finish, and where is it applied? Ask whether the aluminum is powder-coated, and by whom. We apply an electrostatic powder coat with a baked-on finish in our own powder coating facility, in more than 20 colors or a wood-look finish.

4. What does the warranty say, in writing? Ask for the written warranty and read what it covers and for how long. Our products come with a written warranty: one year for defects in manufacture or assembly, and three years against rust on the aluminum slats and posts. The full terms are on our warranties page.

5. What does the written quote include, and what does it leave out? Ask for an itemized quote, with any site work named before you sign. Our quotes are itemized after an on-site consultation and measurement, and we identify site work such as concrete, electrical and demolition at the measurement.

6. How are permits, HOA rules and any engineering handled? Ask every installer this directly, us included, and get the answer in writing. Your city and your HOA may have their own rules for backyard structures, so check with both as well.

7. Is the company licensed? Look up any contractor's license with the California Contractors State License Board before you sign. Our license number is at the end of this page.

How a Mulholland Brand pergola quote works

A Mulholland Brand quote starts with an on-site consultation and measurement and ends with an itemized written price.

  1. On-site consultation. We talk through how you want to use the space, which roof you are considering, and whether you want the motorized Prestige Pergola or a wood-look finish.
  2. Measurement. We custom-measure the pergola on site. This is also when we identify site work: concrete, electrical and demolition. If you choose motorized louvers or LED lighting, this is when we identify the power supply, so you know it will be arranged separately.
  3. Itemized written quote. You get a written price that lists what we will design, fabricate and install, so you can see what is included and what another trade will handle.

Because the price follows the measurement, the quote is for your pergola, not a standard size, and you can compare it line by line against any other quote you collect.
