Mulholland Brand designs, builds and installs custom aluminum pergolas, privacy fences and gates for Orange County homes, so one company can handle the whole backyard. We make all three in-house from powder-coated aluminum, which does not rust or rot, and our own W-2 crews install them. That means one design, one finish and one team from the first sketch to the last gate latch.
At a glance
- One company, three projects: pergola, privacy fence and gate designed and installed together.
- Matching finish: the same powder-coated color or wood-look aluminum across all three.
- Made in-house: designed and manufactured at our factory in Canoga Park, installed by our own crews.
- Gates that work: plan gate swing, side-yard access and smart locks before the fence line is set.
Why plan the pergola, fence and gate together
The three pieces share the same yard. A fence line can block a gate swing. A gate opening can land where you wanted a planter. A pergola looks tacked on if its frame and color have nothing to do with the fence beside it.
When separate contractors build each piece, the result often looks like three projects. When one team designs them together, the posts line up, the colors match and the gate opens where you need it.
Whether it's a side yard in Irvine, a patio in Huntington Beach, a front gate in Newport Beach or a larger backyard in Anaheim, Fullerton or Laguna Beach, we start with how you want to use the space.
Start with how you'll use the yard
Sketch the yard, even by hand, and mark:
- The house, doors, windows and the patio edge
- Pools, outdoor kitchens and seating areas
- Existing fence lines and property edges
- Side-yard, pedestrian and driveway access
- Slopes, retaining walls and drainage
Then decide what each piece needs to do. The pergola might shade a dining table or a lounge area. The privacy fence might screen a neighbor's view or close in the patio. The gate might be a daily route to the side yard or a pool-area entry.
Bring rough measurements and photos to the first meeting: wide shots of the yard, each fence line and both sides of every gate opening. We confirm the final measurements on site before anything is made.
Make all three match
The pergola, fence and gate don't need to be identical, but they should look like they belong together. Decide these once, for all three:
- Color, or wood-look aluminum for the look of wood without the rot
- Frame size and profile
- Horizontal or vertical slats, and the spacing for the privacy you want
- Gate hardware and locks
- Whether the gate blends into the fence or stands out
For a gate that's meant to be a feature, we make custom laser-cut designs. The fence and pergola can stay simple around it. See our horizontal-slat aluminum fences in Orange County.
Decide what the gate needs to do
A gate gets used every day, so plan it before the fence line is final.
Side and pedestrian gates need room for people carrying groceries, bins, pool equipment or garden tools. Think about the path on both sides and where the gate swings.
Driveway gates need room for cars to approach and wait, and a choice between sliding and swinging. See sliding gate or swing gate and our custom aluminum driveway gates in Orange County.
Smart access includes keypad and fingerprint locks, car-integrated openers and intercoms. Tell us at the start if you want them, so the gate is designed for them.
If you live in an HOA community, check its rules before the design is final. Our article on Orange County HOA gates and fencing covers what to ask.
What the written quote should cover
Ask for one written quote that lists each piece separately:
- Pergola size, design, roof style and finish
- Fence runs, height, slat style and privacy level
- Each gate: type, size, swing or slide, hardware
- Smart-access equipment, if any
- Installation and cleanup
- Anything excluded
