Mulholland Brand designs, builds and installs custom powder-coated aluminum fences, wall toppers and gates for homes in Encinitas, Carlsbad and the rest of San Diego County. Our aluminum does not rust or rot, so it holds up near the ocean where wrought iron rusts and wood rots. We make everything in-house and install it with our own W-2 crews.
At a glance
- Built for the coast: aluminum does not rust like iron or rot like wood.
- Fences, toppers and gates: privacy fences, open fences, wall toppers and matching gates.
- Wood look without the rot: wood-look aluminum for a warmer style.
- One team: we design, fabricate and install, so one company answers for the finished fence.
Why coastal fences fail, and why aluminum doesn't
Near the beach in Encinitas and Carlsbad, salt and moisture are in the air most of the year. Wrought iron rusts at the welds and hinges. Wood swells, greys and rots at the posts.
Aluminum does not rust, because rust only forms on iron and steel, and it does not rot. Our fences are powder-coated, so the color is a baked-on finish rather than brushed-on paint. Read more about fences and gates in beach communities.
Fence options for Encinitas and Carlsbad homes
Privacy fences
A privacy fence screens a backyard, pool area or side yard from the street and the neighbors. We build aluminum privacy fences with horizontal or vertical slats and as much screening as you want.
Wood-look aluminum
If you're replacing a rotting wood fence but like the look of wood, our wood-look aluminum has the look and feel of wood without the rot. See our San Diego wood-look fence replacements.
Toppers on an existing wall
Many coastal homes already have a block or stucco wall. An aluminum wall topper adds height and privacy on top of it. We look at the wall's condition and height first and plan the topper around it.
Laser-cut designs
A custom laser-cut panel can turn a fence section or gate into the feature of the yard.
Matching gates
We build driveway, pedestrian and side gates to match the fence. Smart-access options include keypad and fingerprint locks, car-integrated openers and intercoms.
Plan the fence around how you use the yard
Before choosing a style, decide what each part of the fence needs to do:
- Screen a pool or patio from neighbors and the street.
- Mark the front boundary while keeping a view of the house and garden.
- Close off a side yard with a gate you'll use every day.
- Add height to a wall without tearing it down.
Many coastal properties need more than one of these. A backyard privacy fence, an open front fence, a side gate and a wall topper can all share the same finish and slat style so the property looks like one design.
Tell us where the wind comes from, too. On an exposed lot near the bluffs, a fully solid fence catches more wind than one with small gaps between the slats. We'll talk through the balance between privacy and airflow for each section.
Replacing a rusted iron fence or gate
If your current fence or gate is wrought iron, the rust usually starts at the welds, hinges and bottom rail, where salt and water collect. Replacing it with powder-coated aluminum ends that cycle, because aluminum does not rust. Read how aluminum compares to iron.
What a coastal fence quote should cover
Before you sign, make sure the written quote lists:
- Fence material, finish, height and layout
- Posts and footings
- Screws, brackets and fasteners
- How a topper attaches to your wall
- Every gate, with its hinges, latches and locks
- Removal of the old fence, installation and cleanup
Our 7 questions to ask before hiring a fence company in San Diego covers the rest.
