Make your door just about impossible to kick down
Police will tell you that a typical entry into a home by a burglar is to simply kick it hard, right in the area immediately above or below the handle – whichever place you can exert the strongest kick. And that’s true! In that there is rarely more than a thin strip of pine and some short screws, it typically takes just a few hard kicks.
It’s easy to kick the too-typical outside door down. Burglars rarely need tools for this job. But when you have the frame reinforced, it’s a very different story.
Just about every residential door is constructed quite flimsily. They are not difficult at all to get through. You may have thought the crime shows where this is done to be fiction, but typically that’s how it’s done. A few hard kicks in the right place and the door frame splinters at its weakest point and the criminal is inside.
Easy in principle and not a difficult to install. There are several brands that all do the same thing.
You can get a really amazing high security lock that’s nearly impossible to break, and have it be worthless to your security if your door frame is not reinforced.
In this video we see a demonstration of how much more work it is to get through a door that has been properly reinforced. You can see that the design of it is very simple. You can do this yourself, of course, with a few tools; but we’ve done it so often now that we can install these very quickly, and our charges for it aren’t high.
How to Reinforce a Door Frame?
Most burglars don’t need special tools, they simply kick the door near the handle. Why does that work? Because many door frames are built with just a thin piece of wood and a few short screws. That’s not enough to keep anyone out.
Reinforcing the door frame changes everything. It adds strength where the door is usually weakest around the lock and strike plate. There are several products available that make this job easier. They all follow the same principle: extend the reinforcement over a larger area of the frame and use longer screws to anchor it deep into the wall structure.
The process is simple in principle and not difficult to install. You can do it yourself with a few basic tools, but if you’d rather leave it to the pros, we’ve installed these systems many times and can do it quickly and affordably.
Without reinforcement, even the best lock won’t protect you. But with the frame reinforced, your door becomes much harder to break through.
